In winter, bold white spots cover the entire body. Native to Eurasia; introduced in many regions worldwide, where it is now abundant. Often in large flocks. Makes a variety of squeaky vocalizations, including proficient mimicry of other species. Inhabits a wide range of open habitats, often in very close proximity to people. Visits feeders, and is often aggressive, EBird.
A large and gracefully built crane with long and droopy wing feathers. Adults are pearl-gray with a red face and a white stripe running from the crown down along the back of the neck. Juveniles are similar but are tinged with brown across their upperparts. Less tolerant of dry fields than Hooded and Common Cranes, and often found in smaller groups. Taken with the Nikon D850.
