The Heron's Flight

Black and White Photograph of a Great Blue Heron by Robert David Atkinson.

"The Great Blue Heron had always been a solitary bird, content to spend its days wading in the shallow waters of the pond. It had watched as the other animals came and went but never felt the need to join them.

But then, one day, a great storm swept through the forest, uprooting trees and flooding the pond. The Great Blue Heron watched as the waters rose higher and higher, threatening to swallow it whole.

And so, the Great Blue Heron took flight, leaving behind the pond that had been its home for many years. As it flew higher and higher, it felt a sense of freedom and lightness that it had not felt in a long time.

But even as it soared through the sky, the Great Blue Heron felt a deep sadness in its heart. It knew it would never be able to return to the life it had known before, that the storm forever changed everything. And so it flew on, searching for a new home but knowing it could never truly return to the way things were." – RDA
